Why Didn't They Teach Me This in School?
Adulthood came with a paycheck, taxes, insurance, retirement accounts, loans, and absolutely no owner's manual. Start with the question you wish somebody had explained sooner.
Why did earning more change my taxes?
Tax brackets are marginal. Moving into a higher bracket does not make every dollar you earned subject to that higher rate.
What is withholding?
Withholding is money sent toward your expected tax bill during the year. Your refund or balance due helps reconcile what was paid with what your return ultimately calculates.
Why is my paycheck smaller than my gross pay?
Gross pay can be reduced by federal and state withholding, Social Security, Medicare, benefits, retirement contributions, and other payroll deductions.
What does my W-4 actually do?
It gives your employer information used to calculate federal income-tax withholding. Life changes and multiple jobs can make old settings stop fitting.
Why isn't my refund just free money?
A refund can come from overwithholding and/or refundable tax credits. It is the result of the tax-return calculation—not a bonus automatically created by filing.
What does “write it off” actually mean?
A deduction can reduce income used in a tax calculation. Spending $1,000 on a legitimate business expense does not mean the government hands you $1,000 back.
Credit vs. deduction?
A deduction generally reduces income used in the tax calculation. A credit generally reduces tax itself, subject to that credit's rules.
Why can overtime withholding look weird?
Payroll withholding on a particular check is not necessarily the same thing as the final tax attributable to those dollars when your entire year is calculated.
What if I have two jobs?
Each employer sees its own payroll. Your tax return sees the whole year. That can create underwithholding if the W-4 setup does not account for multiple jobs.
Why does a side gig hit differently?
There may be no employer withholding taxes for you, and net self-employment income can involve both income tax and self-employment tax.
What are estimated tax payments?
They are periodic tax payments used when withholding alone is not expected to cover enough of the year's tax.
W-2 vs. 1099?
A W-2 generally reports employee wages and withholding. A 1099 can report many different kinds of non-wage payments, depending on the form.
Why keep receipts?
Good records help support deductions, establish what was purchased and why, and make tax preparation much easier if questions come up later.
What does itemizing mean?
Instead of using the standard deduction, qualifying taxpayers may use eligible itemized deductions when that produces the better result.
What does an extension extend?
A federal extension generally gives you more time to file the return. It does not automatically give you more time to pay tax that is due.
